That usually has something to do with the amount of storage space allowed for your e-mail account, especially with campus accounts, so you can try emptying your trash and deleting any saved messages you don't need anymore. If you are using a gmail account (like your student e-mail), you can also select the option of sending the file via Google Drive. This allows you to upload the item to your own Google Drive and then share that document with the person you are e-mailing.
