In the catalog, look just under the author's name on the catalog listing. This will tell you what the material is as well as have a relevant picture logo next to the label.

You can also tell it's a book if it's located on a deck. Journals and periodicals will be located on the first floor. Look at the location and it will usually tell you what type of resource it is. If in doubt, check the ISBN through Google.
